June 6, 2013 - The Roses Fill Out Even More

Apollo Tribute - from back when I was a J&P test gardener

The rose above, the Apollo Tribute, has followed me to three different gardens.  I just keep transplanting it.  I first received it when I was acting as a test gardener for J&P.  Most of the roses you get are never named - but this one was.  It was only given limited release, which makes no sense to me at all!  It has long been a favorite of mine, having lovely color, beautiful buds, and changing over time to a more muted hue, that lasts and lasts.  (I gave it rave reviews when it was a test rose.)  I am delighted to see it in full bloom, along with all the rest of the roses.  The back yard now is scented with rose - a lovely, light odor.

Other doings around the house - we actually do have a pair of western kingbirds building a nest - in our rain gutters!  Fortunately, the gutters don't get a lot of use from rain this time of the year.  Why they couldn't have built where they usually do, on a utility pole brace, is beyond me!  They really don't like having us using the front deck, and if they actually complete that deck, once the youngsters hatch, I expect they'll try to chase us off.  They are very protective of their young.
