Haleakala Crater

Silversword

Haleakala Crater

We spent time at high altitude, as well as at sea level.  Haleakala crater is at about 10,000 feet, so we all were wearing jeans, hiking boots, and several layers of clothes against the wind.  We did a bit of hiking at the crater, to a couple of overlooks and up on a small peak.  The Sliding Sands trail will have to wait for a year when I'm in better shape.  But it did receive very longing looks, and lots of wishes.

Further down, we hiked in Hosmer Grove and watched the birds.  There were lots of them there - we especially enjoyed the i'iwi birds, and the a'apane, for their bright coloring.  One of the i'iwe finally took pity on us and landed for a while in a bush, so we could enjoy watching through binoculars, and even with bare eyes.

The silversword is a favorite of mine - the color and the shape are both so unearthly, and utterly delightful.  It seems a very appropriate place for such a plant to grow - the landscape itself looks foreign, though in reality, from such landscapes come much of what I call "home".
